동방의등불 [東方-燈-]  
  
라빈드라나드 타고르(Rabindranath Tagore: 노벨문학상 1913년수상


일찍이 아시아의 황금시기에
빛나던 등불의 하나인 코리아
그 등불 다시 한번 켜지는 날에
너는 동방의 밝은 빛이 되리라.

마음엔 두려움이 없고
머리는 높이 쳐들린 곳
지식은 자유스럽고
좁다란 담벽으로 세계가 조각조각 갈라지지 않는 곳
진실의 깊은 속에서 말씀이 솟아나는 곳
끊임없는 노력이 완성을 향해 팔을 벌리는 곳
지성의 맑은 흐림이
굳어진 습관의 모래벌판에 길 잃지 않는 곳
무한히 펴져나가는 생각과 행동으로 우리들의 마음이 인도되는 곳

그러한 자유의 천국으로
내 마음의 조국 코리아여 깨어나소서.

 

The Lamp of the East

In the golden age of Asia
Korea was one of its lamp - bearers
And that lamp is waiting to be lighted once again
For the illumination in the East.”
Where the mind is without fear and the head is held high ;
Where knowledge is free ;
Where the world has not been broken up into fragments by narrow domestic walls ;
Where words come out from the depth of truth ;
Where tireless striving stretches its arms towards perfection ;
Where the clear stream of reason has not lost its way into the dreary
desert sand of dead habit ;
Where the mind is led forward by thee into ever-widening thought and action

Into that heaven of freedom, my Father, let my country awake.

무엇을 잃은 후에야 소중함을 깨닫고,

오랜 객지생활에 고향을 그리워하듯,

장기간 해외생활에 조국 사랑하는 마음도 절로 생기더군요.

조국을 빼앗겼던 일제시대 36년.....

조국이 나에게 해 주는게 없어도,

내 조국 KOREA ~ 긍지와 자부심을 느낍니다.

무(無)에서 유(有)를 창조한 위대한 한국인이 됩시다.
